George Watson graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and entered the public transport industry at Tyneside PTE. Subsequently he moved on to the Greater Glasgow PTE where he became a Senior Planner. In 1979 he joined Western SMT with responsibility for recasting the network as part of the SBG's SCOTMAP project
In 1985 he became General Manager of the newly created Clydeside Scottish bus company where he introduced many innovations including the use of Routemaster buses. The story of this period is documented in his book entitled "Clydeside Scottish, We tried to run a bus company but ...".
Subsequently he worked for Stagecoach Holdings before becoming a director in Sheffield Omnibus, Nottingham Omnibus, Dart Buses and WyvernRail PLC. Concurrently he started acting as a consultant to the transport industry, trading as Elan Public Transport Consultancy Ltd.
